At Carroll Prep, we believe that learning in early childhood should be a joyful experience that fosters confidence and pride in oneself. Our reading program for kindergarten students is carefully designed to enhance children’s sense of competence through age-appropriate activities. We emphasize natural learning without pressuring children to meet goals beyond their developmental readiness.
Learning Through Play: A Balance of Freedom and Structure
Learning in our kindergarten program combines guided play and free play, striking a balance that supports skill development while nurturing children’s natural curiosity.
- Free Play: Offers opportunities for children to explore, learn, and discover on their own. It helps develop problem-solving skills, communication, and collaboration, such as negotiating and resolving issues with peers in real-life situations.
- Guided Play: Enables teachers to introduce key concepts like letters, numbers, reading, and writing in a supportive environment. If children show interest, teachers extend the learning experience; if not, children are free to engage in other activities.
Whenever we have to choose, we always prioritize preserving children’s love for learning above all else. This is why our classrooms are not structured around sitting at desks and staring at a blackboard but are instead tailored to each child’s interests and needs.
Reading Program: Building Confidence and Success
Our reading program aims to help children experience a sense of accomplishment and pride as they learn to read books independently. The design of our beginner reading books supports children’s developmental stages, focusing on encouraging curiosity and using words that are familiar and relevant to their daily lives.
The books include:
- Frequently used words and words children are eager to learn, such as “love,” “hug,” “mom,” and “dad.”
- A mix of easily decodable words and recognizable sight words, much like the approach used in English.

Thai Beginner Reading Books: Designed Specifically for Young Learners
In Thailand, beginner reading books for young children are scarce. We created our own books, inspired by English language teaching methods, allowing children to apply the same skills when learning English.
Our books feature:
- Clear illustrations that help children infer the meaning of the accompanying text.
- A combination of frequently used letters, simple vowels, and decodable words, similar to English CVC words, as well as sight words that children recognize without needing to spell out phonetically.
Examples:
- Words like “กา” (ka), “มา” (ma), and “ขา” (kha) are designed to be easily decodable.
- More complex words like “กอด” (hug) and “รัก” (love), or the names of days and months, are included as sight words. Children are not required to spell these but are encouraged to recognize and remember them through frequent exposure, such as on classroom walls or in games.
Phonics and Sight Words: A Holistic Approach
Phonics covers only about 35-40% of reading skills; the rest relies on recognizing sight words through repeated exposure. The same principle applies to Thai. To support this, we design activities and learning materials that align with this approach.

Behind the creation of our beginner reading books is the dedication of our entire teaching team. It’s not just the language teachers, but all educators working collaboratively under the guidance of the principal to ensure each book meets the developmental and learning needs of our students.
Learning Aligned with Development
Typically, children begin this reading program in Kindergarten 2 (K2) when they start showing interest in words and letters and are developmentally ready for early reading skills.
We do not use reading and writing as a measure of success for kindergarteners but focus on fostering their love for learning and making it an enjoyable experience. For children who progress faster, we offer additional challenges, while for those who are not yet ready, we provide a supportive and pressure-free environment.
